Semaglutide (compound version Ozempic and Wegovy) is a once weekly injectable medication that works by mimicking the action of a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) GLP-1 is released naturally by the gut and stimulates insulin release, lower blood sugar levels and reduce appetite. By activating the GLP-1 receptor, semaglutide helps to regulate blood sugar levels and decrease the feeling of hunger, ultimately leading to weight loss. It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of obesity.
